Winter is here

Each year, there is a distinct week when the temperature plummets and the first storm strikes… more and more, I look forward to this moment as it represents the start of winter hiking. Don the snowshoes and micro spikes, the crisp, quiet, and contrasty forests await.

This year’s first winter hike represented a re-visit to Kaaterskill Falls, which is a worthy visit year round. However, visiting during the winter is truly special due to the sheer volume of ice. The 260 foot waterfall was still flowing and usually is during the winter (even though it was 18 F). Certain years, with consistent very cold temperatures, the waterfall will completely freeze, which is a rare treat for some serious ice climbers.

The hike to the middle tier and bottom of the falls is short and with proper gear, relatively easy. In winter, the entire path is usually all ice so micro-spikes are a necessity. Since the 1800’s, Kaaterskill Falls has been an attraction in the Catskills and continues to impress. Visiting during winter has the bonus of considerably less traffic, and you can almost enjoy the falls alone at times.
